All About Cuba (Evergreen Country) PDF

It's taken a long time, but the world is finally waking up to the glories of Cuba. Of course, the Cubans themselves, a diverse and multicultural population, have long known and appreciated the qualities of their homeland. The jewel of the Caribbean, with a history as rich and colourful as its unique and dazzling music, Cuba is now the hot ticket for those with a taste for the different, the dazzling and the authentic. We all know of the icons of the Cuban Revolution, Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, but how much do we know about how they have transformed the island, so that now it is no longer the playground of corrupt millionaires, but a sensual playground open to all. It might be the extraordinary scenery, the Sierra Maestra mountain range or the endless beaches. Or else it could be the faded glory of old Havana, a World Heritage site and home to numerous beautifully preserved classic cars. Whatever takes your fancy, sand, cigars, salsa or sun, Cuba has it all, and a lot more besides. Surviving the illegal US embargo for nearly 40 years takes some doing, but the Cubans have got what it takes. From "Viva la Revolucion" to "Pass the Rum," there's only one stop to make. And the password? Cuba Si!

5Bedside Traveler
By Deborah Cook
After I opened Cheap Hotels, I kept repeating "I love this book!" First, it's handsomely printed and bound in Germany. The photographs, speaking their own language, are numerous and wonderfully colorful. The text is in English, French and German, reminiscent of operating instructions. As you peruse it you become not an armchair traveler, but a bedside traveler. The beds (and various amenities) pictured can be had for from $4 to $185 per night (strictly speaking the $185 room has two beds). There's a location on the globe for every adventurous soul.

This book is at least as much of a bargain as these rooms.

5A brief glimpse of life on the road
By A Customer
The photos are what lead me to enjoy this book. Unlike many other books on travel this is more of small notebook on places to have a good rest and a surprising new view. Too many books miss bringing the feelings one has had on the road, this one doesn't. It attempts to get that across in the writing and the photos, the brevity of words does reflect how some experiences have no words.

So far have kept this book close to me to get a feeling during those times when something different is needed. The few friends I've given this book to have enjoyed receiving it.

5Rich and wonderful book!
By A Customer
"No hotel room has yet changed my life," begins Daisann McLane in Cheap Hotels, "but many of them have made me, unexpectedly and inexplicably, happy."

This book makes me inexplicably happy. McLane loves travel for all the right reasons, and her joy is infectious. A many-decades veteran of "blind dates" with cheap hotel rooms the world over (as Frugal Traveler for The New York Times, editor and columnist for National Geographic Traveler, and longtime cultural observer for Rolling Stone, Vogue, the Village Voice and others), McLane knows her way around a ryokan. This book is her unabashed love letter to all the places from Bali to Bangor where she has "found happiness." A keen and ideosyncratic observer, brilliant writer and gifted photographer, McLane ferrets out and photographs -- gorgeously -- the grace notes that define a culture: the fragrant frangipani on her pillow in Rarotonga, the elephants parading beneath her window in Madras -- even the killer bedspreads that attack her in lodgings from Texas to Tokyo (do you know how often Motel 6 washes its bedspreads? McLane does, and she is not amused).

A far cry from the featureless, fashion-slave catalogues that pass for most travel guides, Cheap Hotels is a touching personal memoir that wraps itself around you like the beautiful, white, all-cotton sheets in McLane's beloved Hotel Castelar in Buenos Aires. Which is not to say McLane is uncritical: trained as cultural historian, she is crack-smart and very funny -- a great travel companion.

Bryan Burkhart's strikingly attractive design so perfectly complements McLane's vision that is hard to imagine one without the other. Compleat with tricolor, trilingual text (English, French and German) as befits its global theme and Taschen imprint, Cheap Hotels is a handsome coffee-table artifcact: a lovely art book, poignant memoir, cutting cultural critique and super travel guide. And, it makes me laugh.

Ok, I'm crazy about Cheap Hotels. For I, too, love to travel -- and now I remember why.

All About Hand to Mouth to India PDF

I wrote Hand to Mouth to India in 1997/8 at the age of 20 and it’s the tale of how I hitchhiked from England to India with no money.

I risked hunger, Hungarian damsels, Islamic conversion attempts and over-friendly truck drivers as I hitched through England, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and India until I washed up on the shores of Goa with a dollar in my pocket.

5This book marks a change in my life
By Chris K
Hand to mouth to India humbly gives us a genuine view of travelling and justifies the very aim of being on the road as a way of embracing life. It is both the diary of an incredible trip (which is thus being made credible) and an interesting constant introspection that brings callings into questions beyond prejudice. Tom Thumb shows us by travelling without money that hospitality and kindness can be found everywhere. This book is - and will remain - a wonderful source of motivation that I'll keep as an example.

5Perhaps they had expected me to hunt butterflies for food?
By GB10
I was searching for a good book to read on my Kindle and somehow this one popped up. And it was $2.99.

I'll try not to spoil the book, in case you haven't read it yet:
- Feels like a journal that was typed into a book, complete with some grammar, punctuation and spelling errors. Makes it feel all the more genuine.
- I've never hitch-hiked, and doubt I ever will, so I don't know how realistic it is. That is neither good nor bad.
- I learned that yesterday is the same word as tomorrow, in one of the countries in which he travels. Interesting. I won't fact-check that one; I'll just accept it.
- I use my Kindle to highlight vocabulary words that I didn't know (or didn't completely know). I highlighted a bunch. Maybe some are not even words. That's ok too. It's his journal, not mine. He's allowing us to peer into his thoughts as they are.
- A quote that I highlighted, that I seem to like: "If something or someone is beyond explanation then you're more than likely to find them on the Indian sub-continent sooner or later, where everyone has a place. Maybe that's why I was going." (Kindle Locations 750-751).
- Another quote that I laughed at (you'll need to read the book to find the context): "Perhaps they had expected me to hunt butterflies for food." (Kindle Location 2193).
- Many other quotes that I highlighted too. I am sure I will go back ans re-read those quotes and think about them some more. That is the mark of a good book, in my opinion.
- I suspect the true measure of whether this book affected me will be what I think, and what I do, the next time I see a hitch-hiker.
- I was glad the author spent time describing the journey between point A and point B. I suspected it would be a lot about point A or point B. Was good that he focused on the journey.
- If you are a nervous parent who's child might be thinking about hitch-hiking, I would NOT suggest you give this to your children. It will encourage them to do it!

I hope this was helpful. Enjoy.

All About Behind the Veil PDF

"Cardiac resuscitation was often applied to a patient who was fast asleep. The hapless victim woke from a peaceful slumber to find somebody, often an infidel, jumping up and down on his chest. 'Lydia Laube worked as a nurse in Saudi Arabia in a society that does not allow women to drive, vote, or speak to a man alone. Wearing head-to-toe coverings in stifling heat, and battling administrative apathy, Lydia Laube kept her sanity and got her passport back. Behind the Veil is the hilarious account of an Australian woman’s battle against the odds. It will keep you entertained for hours."

5Behind the Veil: An Australian nurse in Saudi Arabia
By A Customer
Lydia Laube in her adventures "Behind the Veil: An Australian nurse in Saudi Arabia" has captured the essence of her experience. She begins by taking the reader on her journey, as she enters Saudi Arabia as a travel nurse on a one year contract assignment. Her love of adventure shines through as she relates to the reader the unique culture shock and customs of this closed country. Her story, for many travelers will be all that they may experience of this oil rich nation that does not admit tourists. Laube successfully pulls the reader into the very essence of the culture, language and customs of the Muslim daily life. She candidly shares the challenges of health care in a nation, plagued by ineffieciency, where women have no rights, censorship is the norm and capital punishment is strickly enforced. Laube remains strong with determination to improve her surroundings, and the level of care at this hospital, a challenge especially as a woman in a culture that does not respect women. She shares the triumphs and sorrows of daily life. Laube relates the misfortunes of expatriates from the Philippines, Sudan, India, Korea and European countries and of recruiting agencies misguided promises. Laube's candid book is a must read for every nurse or health care professional considering a term in Saudi Arabia. Also an excellent resource for expatriates planning a term of service.

4Interesting expat perspective
By John Speer
All I'll say is that the author had the patience (or stubborn-ness!) of a saint! After reading about her experiences with the religious police, what tourist would WANT to go there if they could?

All About I Can Say, "I Slept in Saudi Arabia!" PDF

I Can Say, I Slept in Saudi Arabia!", is a true story based on diaries the author kept when she lived in Saudi Arabia with her husband in the mid 1980s. It tells how she was able to go there when her husband was offered a one year contract to work for their bus company, SAPTCO, and the contract stated, "No wife". This story tells how she managed to get there to live, and what she did when she got there. The chapter titles hint at the many experiences the author had; for instance, underground church services, prison ministery, safety, friends, shopping, etc. She wore the Saudi dress for women, (abaya and veil) and went out by herself and rode the bus. If you would like to know what it was like to live in Saudi Arabia back then, the land of mystique, you will enjoy this book.
